Developing youth through music.

The Leading Tone

We create after-school music programming for kids.

More than an After-School Program.

The Leading Tone brings together a network of resources to create culturally-responsive, community-engaged music-making. Our framework provides the support and flexibility to ensure quality music learning experiences that responds to student needs and leverages the experience of local teaching artists.

Our unique structure connects a variety of groups which amplify each other's expertise to best meet the musical interests and social and emotional needs of our students. Among these are local artists with an interest in education, education professors from Arizona State University who train our teaching artists, and high school and college student volunteers looking to gain teaching experience.

We are intentional about where we locate our projects and believe that equitable access to quality out of school programming can make a difference in the lives of young people. Currently we are partnered with Vista College Prep, located in South Central Phoenix.

The Leading Tone is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

What is the Leading Tone?

In music, it's the seventh degree of a scale - think “Do, Re, Mi” from The Sound of Music. In the song, “ti” (pronounced “tea”) is “a drink with jam and bread,” but “ti” is also the leading tone - as the song says, it brings us back (or leads) to “do”, the home note. The name of this project seeks to evoke that idea. We aim to use music to help young people develop skills to lead themselves.
